Loewy & Puiseux. Atlas Photographique de la Lune. 1894-1909. 71 plates |

Two oversized leather bound folios published by the Observatoire
de Paris. Volumes 1-12 in 2 folios. Folio 1 contains Plates 1 to 34. Folio
2 contains plates 35-71. All plates are heliogravures and have a vellum
overlay sheets with maps and annotations in pencil. Text supplement available
only for volume 12. This general map of the Moon's regions was perhaps the crowning achievement of Lunar photography of the 19th century. Though their theory that volcanic action caused the moon's craters was disproved in the mid 1900s, their striking photogravures display the results of the accomplishments of early astronomical photographers. |
