This photograph was taken by Lunar Orbiter V of site V-5.1, in its mission to photograph selected areas on the front and rear of the Moon and supplemental pictures of candidate Apollo sites. This frame was taken by Orbiter V's focal length wide angle camera. The area shown is an oblique view of the western portion of Mare Fecunditatis with the camera facing west. The two craters in the center of the photo are Messier and Messier A. Note the long ray streak extending westward. When viewed with the band data on the left, north is approximately at the right and the Sun is at the bottom. This photograph was taken August 10, 1967, and relayed to the Goldstone, California, station of the Deep Space Network August 25. Lunar Orbiter V was at an altitude of 60.4 miles when it took this picture. The Lunar Orbiter program is managed for NASA by the Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia. The Boeing Company, Seattle, Washington, is prime spacecraft contractor.
