A Note About Platinum Prints

by Tom Shillea

Photographs made with the noble metals of platinum and palladium are considered the most permanent and beautiful of all black-and-white photographic prints. The platinum print interprets the full tonal range of the negative, from the deepest shadows to the brightest highlights, and produces a lush, full mid-range of values unachievable by any other photographic process.

Each print is made on a single sheet of high quality artist paper, carefully hand coated with a sensitizer specially formulated for the best interpretation of the negative to be printed. The sensitizer dries imbedded into the paper fibers, giving the finished platinum print the illusion of great depth. Because of the way in which the print is made, each platinum photograph can be considered a monoprint.
