Recent Exhibition - Cosmic Architecture and Floating Cities of the Avant-Garde: November 1, 2001 to January 10, 2002

One of the great art movements of the 20th century was born, and flourished, in Russia before and after the Revolution of 1917. Its manifestations included painting and sculpture, photography, architecture, literature and design. Through broad experimentation, two movements within the Russian Avant-Garde stand out – Suprematism and Constructivism. In the golden period for artistic culture after the Revolution, artistic leaders were empowered to form art schools, museums, and theatres that permeated the cultural landscape. Utopian dreams were a constant subject. Cosmic architecture and floating cities were themes that penetrated society through Malevich and his Suprematist movement and then yielded to the Constructivist aesthetic first studied at the VKhUTEMAS school (a precursor to the Bauhaus).
